ART VERDE Opening >> 27 jan 17u >> Brusselsestraat 56

timelab 09 >> 12-18 july >> my city is my instrument GENT
0 Comments Published by Administrator July 22nd, 2009 in sound, workshopswe’ve been working on great projects within the timelab in Gent. This video shows how I finished lasercutting my add-ons for traffic signs or other public design. I made two hooks with a precise fit for hooking up a string, which I can tension whenever I want. There is a bridge in the middle of the string, so the whole urinoir starts to become sound!

Overview
Experimental make-workshop with multilayered outcome for people interested in sound, DIY-biology, microscopy and interaction of living microorganisms. Knowledge in physical computing, video and sound processing, electronics and puredata is welcome, but not compulsary.
Description
In this workshop the experiments will take place in close-up view of microorganisms
(e.g. water bears aka tardigrades, amoebae and collected organisms from urban environments), which appears to be a world by itself. Maybe due to the scaling and the amplification of a microscope, but maybe also due to all parameters of imagination that the microcosmos provokes. Growth and behaviour of these
microscopic animals remind us of our own micro-macro-development. With the image and the movement of the organisms, the participants are encouraged to collect inspiration and bridge video and sound to what they experience with these small “animalcules”, as termed by their first observer Leeuwenhoek in 1677.
The participants will learn
How to work with the usb-microscopes and hack webcams to be used as microscopes, observe the behaviour and motion of the waterbears and other microorganisms, find sounds from the lab equipment, hack into electronic devices to integrate into bioelectronic culture devices and build habitats for the animals. Also they will discover sounds from the different instrumentation and utilities of the laboratory. Recycle and compose arrangements for Lab-visual and Lab-sound scapes and benefit from a cross fertilization between the whole (scientific) equipment (you can bring your own too!) and an artistic metaphorical language.
The outcome can be a video with a microscopic soundtrack, a living object with singing waterbears, a performance with laboratory sounds, or an openLab Hackteria installation.
Material needed
The participant should bring their own laptop/computer, a webcam with an adjustable lens and some general lab stuff they have access to.
Material available
various labware, glassware, petri-dishes, usb-microscopes, microorganisms, soldering stations, electronic parts, arduinos etc..

Walden Kunstausstellungen g. e.V. i.G
Kastanienallee 86, 10435 Berlin
16. – 25. November 2007
ERWEITERT:
labor in unser labor aufbauen.
Bauelementen:
Gebrauchsgegenstände, verstärker, piezo microphone, effektgeräte, minimotoren, solarzellen, etc, etc, etc.
Werkzeuge:
Lötkolben 6 stück
feinmechaniker werkzeug
werkzeugkiste mit standard werkzeug und tischklemme,
dremmel und trennscheibe, stichsäge.
Kleber und tacker.

In my secondimpress 2 , the workshop sustainable design, the nightwatcher does got a friendly face, new FEbike and turtles dance!
So sometimes I think it is quite hopeless what I am doing… A sustainable / recycling workshop in the country where resources are utmost exploited. Whereas traditional chinese production has to do with sustainability in its purest form, recent wealth and economy-growth are known to be the reasons, as far as we see. I’m told that not even 20 years ago china was everywhere much much cleaner. But now even in the remote places, waste is being dumped basicly everywhere. So when I started my workshop in order to make awareness of the resources we throw away in our daily lifes, many “new” resources for our course where already available in close sight. And actually I started to make some paper to cardboard in different shapes. Also local industries are contacted to enrich our workshop. Many mis-printed KFC packaging is now being re-designed by fifteen very motivated students. I try to give you an impression of the first results. I hope the photos explain themselfs. (anyway I post a seperate article on the workshop once everything is done)

And tomorrow I’m looking forward to watch the turtles again in lee’s appartment who is a collegue and has two turtles I’ll be in charge with.
I had the honour already once and also this dancing turtle has become a friend. Wish I could understand their bodylanguage, and yes on the menu I’ve seen them several times now, but I refuse to order them. Now I prefer for my health a recycled bike (Yellow) this time. A foldable one which is quite small but lasts better then the other bikes. And again I got a smile from the brand name: FEbike. I made already some amazing trips with this little bike, quite easy to pack in a cab aswell if I underestimated the distance once again. To get from A to B in Beijing feels sometimes from A to Z actually. But you know me, without a bike i cannot think properly.
As you can see I found new patriotism in one of my busy phonecalls trying to get an original accordeon of a chinese brand (daishenze 798). Almost I found it in this beautiful shop. But with help of my friend LONGKING, i found an old accordeon specialist in the deepest inside of the biggest hutong i’ve ever been to.
Due to the olympic games this hutong is still alive, and actually it is renovated to leave some impression of the old beijing in sight for foreigners, but I wonder how many people will find this acordeon specialist. Amazing, 1 hour of one little street after the other, thanks to my new friend LONGKING (who is on the picture in another store not far from the hidden city). Next time i’ll add a photo of my secondhand ” baile” accordeon. Couldn’t listen to the PARROTS anymore so i give “baile” (spanish for dance) a real good new chance!
Daishenze 798 keeps on suprising me. Cause actually the newest art of asia is proudly presented in a very proffesional way. And I love the miniwigs in this object. As I’ve been impressed by other works not far from daishenze in the winefactorydistrict such as this Nike Bomb and the work of Shuyong. Hope you like it too :-)
Actually one of my favourit bars in my un-favourit bar-district street next to shanlunti, you can get a fine if you do shit. Recycle somewhere else is the message. Don’t hope the chinese wealth will provoke to export our and their waste back to us …

At the airport I got picked up by my friend and charming host mr. Tao Kai Zheng and 3 of his students. My plane landed a half hour earlier than sheduled and so I was suprized I was already awaited. We went inmediatly to the City Life Style Design Department of the School of City Design which is part of the CAFA (Central Academy of Fine Arts) This department though is a little further to the north-east. Not far (25min) from the airport. Luxury real- estates are rising and publicity on the fences happily anounce: extreme international life in airport city. It’s all next to Monet’s park and europe-ville and today I saw chateau de vie on my way to a shop.
This time I borrowed a bike which I probably occasionally need though riding to the center of the city won’t be my ambitious goal. No, I better get used to campus life soon. Anyway the guarded communities are expanding and I see more fences and cameras. After being introduced to my new dormitory, we said goodbye for this day, and I just went for a walk on the campus to get rid of my jetlag. And there it was, the first shock. A stiff guard standing in front of a side entrance of the dormitory watching closely every step.
I nodded friendly but couldn’t see him clear in the darkness. No move, no reaction, no smile as I ‘m used too. I was a little scared so I just quietly went back to bed in the hope i would get somehow another introduction to this guard. The next day I got up at 8 to go to an opening of a creative market and a new shop, one of the student had recommended it. A shop full of boxes, where young artists can rent a box and sales are done by the owners. Quite central and next to the biggest carrefour I’ve ever seen in the center of a city. Great stuff was made by the young creatives,
slightly different from things i’ve seen but quite a couple of new things too. Basicly funny japanese kind of manga diversications and later I bought a shirt with sound sensor that lightens up whenever the sensor gets a sound input. Also the carrefour was impressive with over 50 counters of course with long lanes and yes every counter had 3 till desks in a row. At least 150 places to pay and a many more people waiting to do so. O.k. the traditional harvest is celebrated. Or is it the mid-autumn-festival? Well if I believe the students it is the mooncookie festival, and everyone gives eachother many many cookies where the package counts even more than the cookie!
Now a little more to the reasons i’m staying here. I’m invited to do a 4 week workshop on recycling, sustainability and re-use, at the same CAFA. 15 students of the 3rd year of the city design school are participating. We are succeeding slowly in a consumptive world like this one. Although we’ve many many resources due to that. So mooncookie-packagerecycling is on top of the list….. or not? see/read for yourself in the next secondimpress 2.

STEIM presents a workshop and a lecture by soundbike artist Kaspar König.
A workshop in which do-it-yourself manipulation of ordinairy bicycles leads to high-end sound-generators and performing instruments.
Bring a bike and transform it together with the knowledge and enthousiasm of inventor-artist Kaspar König.
Creating acoustic extensions for the bicycle sounds like a contradiction-in-terms to the design of a bicycle. In this workshop everybody is invited to discover the many sounds hidden in the bicycle itself and the bicycling. To make a regular bicycle-sound we can easily neglect the maintainance of a bicycle. By not only turning the bicycle upside down but by actively adding sound-sensors, we`ll discover the possibilities of soundbiking. Add-ons can be everything from a playing-card and laundry wedges, to fully powered amplification for strings, microphones and all other things that fit the conditions of the soundbicycle and its creative maker.
How can a bicycle brake become a brake beat?
By turning the wheel regularly, a bicycle likely becomes a time-pulse or measure. By finding the right spots to control the sound input, more musical patterns can be discovered while the wheel is turning. Now it`s up to our imagination to invent all kinds of little things we could try to mount on the existing mechanisms as well as discover new mechanisms.
Can every bicycle become a musical instrument?
Basically yes, if some parts are still rotating, sounds can be created. Although a full functional bicycle can ride on the streets and the street is the best trigger for the soundbike!
Is there a composition in the street?
That is a good question. For many reasons I believe several streets sound better then others with and without the use of a soundbike, depending on the charactaristics of the bike and the street. Drive your soundbike outside and experience the biggest score of the world: the street! Let your ear decide!

OVERVIEW on the latest circuit bending workshop.
1 Comment Published by Administrator November 1st, 2006 in news, workshopsIn order to achieve new sounds out of old instruments, the circuit bending principles are very appropriate. In this 2 weeks at Datenklang.de “s workshop, we’ve been looking into amplifiers, videoplayers, guitartuners, theremins and many more circuits.
Just look at the photos. Many thanks to Simos Lomverdos Gautier, Sophia Mavragani, Roar Lindberg , Martin Rüge, and of course to Christoph Klemke.
book now: such a inside electric experience!

KOMBINAT 06
Das Schlag.Zeug. Leitung |

audiotrainer, audiosport, audiolympics
0 Comments Published by Administrator January 18th, 2006 in audiotrainer, sound, workshopsIn this experimental project, our aim is to
practically experience the relation between indoorfitness-
utilities and music. The human body uses a rhythm to
maintain a endurance during a training. Is
this the same endurance we use in a dance club?
Could we do more training when we produce music
meanwhile? Would we dance more if we’re sure how
our body moves on music? In this innovative project
we’re keen to find amazing sounds produced by friction
and traction from the body on (and as) a
machine.
Experiment:
In order to find this relation, we want to
make a training utility based on an existing sportdevice
like a home-trainer.This machine will be prepared
with (midi-)sensors and microphones. By connecting
a computer with the appropriate software
the training machine will trigger samples and beats.
The user of the device will start to train with and
without a beat. The natural build up of a training program
will be maintained. The behavior of the user will
be measured in endurance and in joy of the training
program.
Context:
The fitnesscenters are full of training devices
and people who are training on these machines often
use a personal musicplayer to accompany the training.
The idea to combine machine and musicplayer
could open a new field of soundscapes and training
programs that give music a new meaning as well as
training a new audio context:“The art of training or
the training of audio” If endurance on a fitnessdevice
can be connected to the joy of creating music, a relation
in movement and synchronized sound can connect
a lot of senses The user get stimulated and for
people listening and looking to the user become a
feeling to movement and sound.
Outcome:
when the Artwork is tested and supplied with
samples seducing the user to continue the
rhythm, the training can center a new level of interaction
and communication between body and mind.
basically anybody (musical or not, sportive or not) is
invited to become a new perception of sensibility
towards the body, endurance and listening pleasure.
